External USB Hard Drive

This semester in school I had a couple of classes in which I had to buy a hard drive with a removable rack to use in the various lab computers. The class in now done and I have this 80gig hard drive which I want to use for backups, music, etc. I went to Fry's and purchased an external hard disk drive case (very cool BTW Here is the link: http://www.ppa-usa.com/product_pages...sures/2162.htm ).
This isn't exactly a problem but when I plugged it into my computer the hard drive showed up as two different letter drives F: and G: , both showing 40gigs of capacity.
Does anyone know why the external drive was split into two drives? I'm pretty sure the hard drive wasn't partitioned before and is there a way to format the drive so it reads only under one drive at the full 80 gigs? Or should I just leave it and format each of the 40 gigs separately?

Thank you!!

i'll assume you run 2000 or xp ,clik on start then, control panel, performance and maintenance, administrative tools, computer management, and lastly clik on disk management and you can then delete and reformatt

The hardrive showed as two coz someone made it so,as from new they are not formatted etc
