Epson scanner

I have a epsono perfection 1660 scanner. I installed it on a xp system, everything went fine, I connected it (new hardware found...and so on), but when I run an application it says 'Scanner used by other application or not connected' I tried to upgrade the twain drivers, (Epson twain 5) but it does not work. I Reinstalled the epson sw many times, whitout success. Help!!
