pc card slot problems

I have a Thinkpad 600x and I am trying to install a wireless pc card. The card is intermittently recognized, but usually freezes the screen so I haven't been able to get it installed.

I currently use another pc card on this laptop, serial port adapter, and it works fine. I have tried the wireless pc card in both slots, and tried different manufactuers. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.
