NVidia graphics card driving me NUTS! HELP!

ditto problem but.....

Following is an extract from an existing thread which sums up the problem to a tee.

"in the middle of a game or a while i am watching a video, screws up the graphics, everything goes with lines again , but not the whole screen , just the video. or while i am running a game, the PC turns off the monitor for a moment, then starts it back again only that the game gets stuck , or the PC works EXTREMELY slow (as if it stops for a monent, then comes back for a second to work again, then stops again and so on).
and when i start the PC again i get an error message from windows saying i had a major system crush and the cause to that seemed to be the drivers for my NVIDIA GEFORCE 256 card. "

I am running just about every anti-malware program you can shake a stick at and I regularly use panda activescan to double-check, there are no spyware bugs or other snoopy little glitches showing up, no viruses, trojans or worms courtesy of AVG and WormGuard, but the same problem occurs with my machine. It is an AMD2600+XP barton based ASUS motherboard with NVIDIA chipset, so I thought that the best graphics card would be NVIDIA GeForce FX5500 256mb 128bit. Fool that I am. I have tried everything INCLUDING ACTIVE KILLDISK PRO and re-initializing the drives, but the problem just keeps occurring. HELP!

In addition, my brother-in-law has exactly the same internals in his 'puter, but he runs win2000 pro and he has the same symptoms, but he does not use on-line gaming. I am beginning to wonder if there is a compatibility issue with the GeForce FX family of cards and ASUS motherboards...Anyone else experience anything similar?

Make a visual check that the video card's fan is spinning and isn't locked up or dragging. Also try running with the side panel off, and point a common housefan in there... kinda sounds like heat build-up. At least you'll eliminate that possibility.

Thanks for the reply. much appreciated. will give it a try seeing as the original fan went FUBAR and I had to replace that some months ago. The fan is clean and spinning (being kinda anal I do take the panels off and clear out the dust and hair spiders regularly) but I recall that replacing the fan did improve the situation a tad....but I had forgotten all about it. Trust bloody NVIDIA to be cheapskates and fit noggy little fans instead of putting a decent bit of kit in there in the first place. Cheers 'n beers. Have a pint on your colonial cousin from the other side of the pond.

Ahhhh. Much appreciated.

Did you use a good thermal compound under the new heatsink/fan? And if you did, do you trust that it is on properly?
