speakers not compatible with sound card??!!

I just purchased a HP pavilion... comes with a realtek ac'97 card. My previous computer (Gateway) came with Boston Acoustics "Digital BA735" 2:1 speakers. No sound. After troubleshooting the best I can, I finally noticed the plug for the speakers has only a single ring at the tip (I can't think of the term right now) but my buddy's speakers (in which I did get sound when he brought them over!) has two rings at the end. I apologize for the ignorance but I always thought a plug was a plug.... aparently not.

Is there an adapter that converts between the two, would that work? Do I need to solder on a "two ring" plug? Is there any reason to think this isn't even the problem? I know my speakers work fine on the old computer. Still, I'm just trying not to move the sound card over to the HP. Any advice would be awesome, thanks!

just to eliminate your speakers take them over to your buddys and try them on his machine, if they don't work then you can look for an adapter if they do then look to updating your driver for your sound card,you can get it here http://drivers.soft32.com/driver/dow...C97-24536.html
