accessing slave hard drive

On my gateway 933 my hard drive locked up it had millenium on it .i got a new hard drive put xp on it and put old drive on as a slave .the old drive doesn't show up as a drive .it also doesn't show up in windows explorer.do i need to install it in bios ? all i need to do is salvage some pictures from old drive.i downloaded a recovery program off internet and it shows new drive in 0 position and old drive in position 1 but with no drive designation .they want $70 for the rest of the program to recover the files . thanks kdkng

could you have shocked you hard drive? what i mean is, have you been having power surges lately? i had a similar problemw ith my cousins computer, the drive would be detected

my drive would be detected as IDE0 POSITION1. meaning that its on the primary slave channel. It would be registered in bios but when windows loads it doesnt work at all. I couldnt even check the drive in DOS.
