HP T860 uk problem with 6600gt graphics card

Hi.

I bought a new pc last week and decided to upgrade the graphics card. I bought a bfg 6600gt oc graphics card and installed it with the latest drivers. Everything was fine until a couple of days ago. I was playing half life 2 and all of a sudden the screen froze. Nothing would happen then all of a sudden the computer went into hybernation mode (the monitor said 'going to sleep'). I could not get the computer running again from this position so switched it off. Whenever I turned it back on again it kept doping the same thin. The computer seemd to be running but the monitor kept saying going to sleep. I put the old graphics card back in and everything works fine. Its nothing to do with the praphics card driver as I tried putting the graphics card in without a driver installed only to have exactly the same problem.

I've noticed on the box of the graphics card it says, only compatible with a pci express motherboard. I haven't the foggiest what motherboard is on my computer and don't know how to find out. It also says that it needs a minimum power supply of 300w, again I don't know what mine is and don't know how to find out.

Does anyone know what my problem is? is it anything to do with my motherboard or power supply? Or is it a broken graphics card?

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Ian

If you bought the card, make sure you know exactly what to do with it. Was the fan of the card plugged into the power supply?

Another thing you can check is the power rating on your power supply. To do so, you must open the case and read the large label sticker on it. The power rating is in W(Watts). If you just bought the computer brand new, it will probably have a 420w PSU

Typically, there is a label or a chipset logo on the motherboard itself, so get back to me on what the mobo is and we will be able to determine whether your video card is compatible with your mobo.

Thanks. I'm at work at the moment so am not able to check my computer until I get home. I've taken the card back and got a refund as I was sure the card was broken/faulty. When you say was the fan of the card pluuged into the power supply I'm not sure what you mean. I am not aware that you plug the fan into a power supply, there certainly wan't a lead with the card to enable you to do this. I've also taken the side panel off the computer to see if I can check the power rating. There is an enclosed metal box inside, where the power lead goes into the computer. It has a white label on and if I remember correctly it shows two different wattages, however, these show 180w max and 280w max (these are both next to voltage numbers). It is a brand new computer but is this really the wattage? It does seem rather low. The mother board detail are as follows -

Manufacturer: Asus

Motherboard Name: PTGD1-LA

HP motherboard name: PufferM-UL8E

I want to get another card so any further help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

wrong board

u should really check to see wheather u have agp pci-e or pci, cause that board only has pci. pci express or agp wont work in there. LOL. i have the same board. if u go to the manufacturers site it'll tell u it has only pci. that really sucks cause pci sucks, and agp and pci-e are better. what really ticks me off is that on the board u can see where they ripped off the pci-e x16 connector, to cut costs i guess.

omg...... forget what i wrote, ur talking bout the UL8E, ok that has pci-e
srry cant help.
