USB ports are not recognizing any devices

This is driving me insane. Anything I connect to USB ports, PC won't recognize them at all. It seems that I can still charge my mp3 player using usb ports but the pc just won't pick up on anything that I connect - i.e) under device manager, nothing shows. I've tried connecting my USB storage device (which by the way works ok on my other pc), digital camera, mp3 player, printer.. etc but all failed. sigh..

I am using P4 3.0Mhz, Asus P4P800SE MB, 512MB DDR400 ram, Win XP Pro SP2. I am not that good with computers and I don't know where to turn. I have done some research myself and did the following; I deleted the usb devices from device manager and let windows install them again. I've also updated Bios to v1.08 and intel chipset driver to the latest version( i think it was called inf install v1.6?). However, I haven't had much luck in trying the methods mentioned above. If anyone can give me any advice on what I can do to fix this problem, it would be much much appreciated. Thank you all in advance.

can you disable the usb ports in BIOS or with a jumper on the mobo? if so, then get back to me

Thank you very much for your reply.
Yes. I can disable the USB from BIOS menu. I am not sure what you meant by a jumper ( I'm quite new to all this) but on the motherboard, some cables are connected which seem to be providing power to usb ports.

jumpers are small plastic modules, or electrical connectors you might say. some say they are a form of a switch. these so called, switches, connect two pins together, moving the electrical current in a totally different position rather than putting the jumper on two different pins.

your motherboard might have a set of pins with a jumper allowing your usb ports to work. refer to your motherboard manual and diagrams to find what i am looking for.

but if u usb ports work now, then don't even bother

Thanks for that. I checked the manual and the jumpers are there. Also, checked the board and jumpers are positioned as per the manual suggests. My usb ports are still not working. Any thing else I can look for? Thanks
