Hard disk problem - capacity is now 500 GB instead of 40 GB

Hi all,
I have P IV , 40 GB hard disk , 128 MB DDR RAM PC. My hard disk has four partitions C: D: E: F:
I formatted C: alone and then installed win 98 in it. while at the end of installation, it asked for certain files which my CD didnt have so just skipped all those.

When I went to my computer and checked, all the D E F drives were found missing and instead it showed 486 GD D :

when i created a start up floppy and ran fdisk from it in DOS it said unable to read the hard disk.
now C: alone is working with 10 GB.

What is the problem.
Is my hard disk got corrupted ?
what is the solution for it?

freind i have a similar problem...
my hardisk increased from 120 gb to 195 gb when i deleted one partition using xp disk manager....
all my other partitions and data is safe till now but i m very scared and shocked....

if u get to know the solution....
plz help me out as well...
