Hard Drive problem

Ok I dont want to sound to dumb,,,,, but here it goes. Ok I have a HP, and awhile back the hard drive went out, no big deal, had a new one put in. Now I had gotten a virus and need to re-format, no big deal, yeah right. Now I "finally" got my system running, but it only reconizes 2GB. It should be like 60. I have been reading about partitions and FDISK and all that fun stuff, but I still cant get it to read the hard drive right. The system came with ME and I have the XP upgrade. The problem with that is,,,, there isnt enough room on hard drive &*@#!%#$. Any suggestion would be great.

Ohh yeah,, at first it was FAT16, I got it to change to FAT32, but cant get it to change to NTFS or what ever its called. !!

Thanks !!

What is your PCs Configuration, is it Pentium 1, 2, 3 or 4? Some motherboard do not support more than 20GB. If your have a Pentium 3 or 4 motherboard that support a 60GB hard drive then you need a clean boot floppy disk and run fdisk just to delete the all the partitions and let XP do the formatting. You may need to try this process more than once until XP give you the option to format your drive using NTFS.

It is a P3. It worked at one time but then I got a virus and now after getting it to format its messed up. Should I re format with XP only? Cause when I tried to load XP I didnt have enought space. Remember I have the XP upgrade version.,, Thanks

Use Windows 98 Boot Disk, then delete and create the partition using FDISK.
Format the drive using the same diskette. If you still don't get the right partition size, try to delete and create the partition again then try to format it using XP. You may need to repeat this process untill you achieve the right capacity. I am suggesting this just because I have encountered and resovled the same problem.
