Hard drive formating

hello. i have a 250 gb hard drive (external) which i need to format. it does not appear under my computer, but appears to be connected and working properly. i am running windows xp, 2000 mhz, pentium 4, 768 ram, 40 gb original drive with 3 gb left on it. i followed a tutorial on another site which said to type "fdisk" under run, but windows couldnt find it. not sure what to do. any help?

thank you.

Hi Lordoftheweb,

It's not showing up in "My Computer" as a drive because it has no format.

Try this:
Right click "My Computer"
Select "Manage"
Select "Disc Management"
Find the disc you wish to Format
Right Click on the disc and select "Format" from the context menu
Then follow the prompts
This process will give you one large partition (250 gig)

Another method would be to boot from your XP install disc and proceed as though you were doing a fresh install (just go as far as the partitioning and formatting on the install process) BE CAREFUL - if you're not familiar with the install process, use the method above. Doing it this way would allow you to partition and format your drive to your likings.

A bit strange....

sorry but just saw this.

Please clarify -
What interface is this HD connected via? USB? 1.1 or 2.0?
If you cannot see it under my computer, where is it visible?

What I mean is, how do you know it is working?

Keeep it cool....
