formatting hard drive

I'm having problems trying to partition and format a 8 gb hard drive
it's a 3rd drive in a compaq - win 98se

when I go to fdisk.. it doesn't read the whole drive any more
only about 1.9 gb of it

I've tried using partition commander 9 and that also only reads about the same

What can I do to recover the lost hd space?


I just realized that my computer is reading that there is another hard drive
(which there shouldn't be) and it reads it as 582 GB!
and it works... why would this be?
I used partition commander 9 to partition my main hard drive and the one noted above (which is not connected anymore at the moment) and uninstalled it... but this hard drive out of know where is still there.....

Any thoughts on why that is?

does the bios show the correct size for the hdd ?
run fdisk option4 on the hdd and post resaults. I suspect it is fat16 vice fat32 file system. IF so delete partition and be sure when fdisk starts you select enable large disk support, and remake partiton. Be sure you deleat and remake partiton on the correct hdd.

That has me totoly stumped on that size of hdd. check the drirectory and try to figure out what acture hdd or hdds it contains. When you run fdisk make sure all hdd's are correctly shown.
