Angry locking up

Not sure this is a hardware issue. I have an AMD machine running Windows XP. System will freeze. No messsages just freezes. If I try to reboot, after memory test it says detecting IDE drives. after a few seconds its lists the devices and says >Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter<. It can't find the hard drive. Once in a while it will startup and get to desk top and freeze while putting the icons in the tool bar or will complete and be locked up so you can't do anything else. If I leave it off for several hours or overnight it (sometimes) will boot up and work fine for a minute, an hour, a day or a month you never know. If I get it working I don't shut it off. About ready to throw out, but its only 18 months old.

Check all hard drive connections.
Would this be a quantum HD?

Sounds like something could be overheating.

Think I may have found problem. I have a Phillips CD-RW drive. A few weeks ago I noticed it was not working. I did'nt pay much attention as I only use that drive when I want to copy something to a CD. I unplugged it, I have rebooted system several time since and it works great. I think that was my problem.

I had this same problem a while back. It would freeze up & would not fully reboot, no matter what I tried. 'bout drove me crazy. After about 24 hours it would reboot ok. I had an MSI motherboard. After changing everything else to no avail, I changed motherboard & fixed the problem. A friend of mine who also had an MSI had the same problem & results.
