Intermittent XP freezing problem

Hi all,

First post here. I have been having an intermittent problem with XP Pro in that for no apparent reason the machine just freezes and I have to restart it as CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't respond.

I have done some searching and the most likely culprit is that maybe the machine is overheating. I have attached a pic of the temperatures as found by PC Wizard 2004. Do they look okay or should I be concerned?

Many thanks for any help

Regards

SOS

PS

I previewed my post and the uploaded pic didn't appear so if the image doen't appear the values are:

Processor Temperature 170 degrees centigrade
Mainboard Temperature 390 degrees centigrade

Centigrade?

170 sounds high to me.... is your heatsink and fan approved by Intel/AMD?

either this is a joke, or you have a serious problem.
kesser is right that temp is high.....way to high even if the temps were mesured in fahrenheit. if you are not kidding about the temps shut the machine down untill you either add cooling or take it to a shop or technician.

Play_The_Odds,

It's no joke - seriously. If you can tell me how to post the graphic of PC Wizard 2004 so you can see it I'll gladly do it. I've already uploaded a bmp of that screen to imagestation and inserted it into my original message but - no joy.

Generally speaking the machine runs well enough

Spec

AMD 64bit 3ghz processor
XP Pro SP2
SoundBlaster Audigy
NVidia FX 5200 Graphics
1.5G RAM

Play_The_Odds,

I've just downloaded Hardware Sensors Monitor from AB Software and it tells me that my cpu temp is 71.0 degrees centigrade.

I just don't know what to think now

anything over 60c on a amd processor and i start adding fans, venting cases, or what ever it takes. hardware setups vary and cook temps for amd are disputed. around 90c a amd processor is supposed to cook. i have several amd processors booted right now and looking through actual temps as i am posting i have:
Athlon XP1500+ 1.3 266 mhz fsb 33c

Athlon XP2600+ Barton 333 fsb 39c

I dont have a sempron handy to look at but the ones i have delt with usually run from 39c to 45c depending on the case and air flow it gets.

Athlon 64 3000+ 800mhz fsb is running 45-54c under a pretty heavy load because i am doing some stuff with it.
these are all using the stock coolers that came with retail processors.
if anyone of them gets above 62c the bios is set to alarm and the machine is shut down.
alot more people are building their own pc now....it really isnt hard but they buy cheap cases off ebay or upgrade a case from a p3 system and do not have enough cooling. they also stuff a big agp video card on a board with a big processor in a micro atx case with one fan and wonder why they have trouble. another big heat producer is some hard drives. ever see a maxtor drive run on ata 133? they get to hot to touch without a hard drive cooler stuffed in micro atx cases next to cdrom and other drives.

I checked the BIOS this morning and noted that the cpu temp is 16c , the system temp is 31c and shutdown should occur at 60c.

I don't know where the downloaded software gets its figures from but I certainly feel much more content at seeing the BIOS info.

i have mixed results from software programs that monitor hardware...i tust the bios more. did you just turn on the pc when it showed a 16c temp, or had it been on a while?
16c sounds to cool....even if you water cool a athlon 64.

That was just first thing in the morning and checking the BIOS figs. I only have a standard cooling fan that came with the Athlon 64bit 3ghz processor. I will post back with temp figs from BIOS when the machine has been running for a while

Thanks

I have the same problem

Oh yes I have been looking for an answer for weeks. I have the same problem. Usually it is when I am playing a game. So I just stopped playing games on the computer. Now I am trying to convert movie files to DVD files and it freezes as soon as I start the software. I have three fans in my system already and the temperature does not seem to be a problem, could it be some drivers. I could really use some help.
Thanks
