Question Getting the most out of a new ATA 133 80GB HDD.

I was just wondering what steps I have to take to get my new ATA133 hdd to run at 133ATA? So far the fastest I've seen is 100ATA. It's been slower when I had my older DVD-ROM attached to the same ribbon cable (ATA66). Now I have it set up as Master with an older ATA66 HDD as the secondary. Does the drive want to be on it's own to get the speeds?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks

i was always under the belief that the slowest device on an IDE channel dictated the speed. also just incase, make sure your ribbon cable is certified for ata133. alot are not, and a cheap ribbon cable is like cheap speaker wire. sure it may work, but usually not in top form.

The drive will only oprate at the speed of the slowest device on the cable.
also, your motherboard/IDE connector must support ata 133.
if your motherboard supports 133, then you would have to either run the drive by itself, or with another 133 device.

hey encino, you should check up on his board! looks like a mean mofo. and to top it off, it is blue. i may just look towards albatron for my next upgrade.

and that is what i thought (the speed issue), but i know stuff changes every day, and did not want to say for sure without backup.

Actually I have the Silver Version... It's still a great board though... After digging around however.. I found out that only the raid channel supports ata133. IDE connectors only support ata100.

Problem with the raid is that it only supports 1 IDE ata133 drive. You HAVE to have a serial ata drive to get raid working on this board...

Sorry, one more thing... My ata133 runs at 100 on the IDE channel. I'm also running an ata66 on the same channel and different speeds are supported. Quite possible that some boards lower the speeds to match but not this one...

i have good news for you ,wantmilk. it seems as though there is not much to be gained (yet) with ata133. all reviews i have read in the past 2 days say that they don't expect ata133 to get very big before being snuffed out by the serial ata interface and drives. i need to read up more on this, because it just don't sound right. how can a serial (can only communicate one way at a time) interface be faster than a parallel connection (both ways at same time)? pretty interesting.
