hdd suddenly not showing

Ok guys this one is a little odd.

I have two Western Digital hdd's on my system, one for programs (C: 80gb), one for video (D: 200gb).

They both appear in BIOS no probs,

They both appear in My Computer no probs,

They both have been working fine for the past 2 months with no problems.

Yesterday I added about 50gb of video to the D drive (bringing it to about 100gb total) and all of a sudden that drive is no longer showing up in My Computer!

On further investigation, in Computer Management > Disk Management it is showing up as a drive with no label and 186.30 gb free space.

Have I missed something here and has my drive been somehow wiped and I will need to re-format it again, thus losing a truck load of unbacked up work? or is there a quicker solution?

There is no longer a drive letter assigned to this drive and I cannot assign one to it. I am lost and confused as to why this happened.

I have done a full virus scan (however my anti virus will only scan the C drive, as it doesn't see the other one) and nothing unusual has been reported.

I am running XP Pro and haven't installed anything new, nothing different than any other time I have added to this drive.

Any help here would be totally appreciated!

cheers

Try shutting down your puter and unpluging it. Open the case and ground yourself. Unplug the hard drive not being seen by the puter. Restart puter then shut it down again and unplug it. Open the case and ground yourself. Reconnect the hard drive and restart again. Windows should find new hardware. Hope this works.

Hi Flyfsh, tried that already with no success.

I have concluded that somehow I have lost everything. Last night I did a reformat of the drive and interestingly, now the drive is only being recognised as 127gb, when it is a 200gb drive!

I am running XP pro with all updates, have re installed the intel chipset patch and also run a western digital data lifeguard diagnostic on it with no success.

Here is the intell application diagnostic report: (the relevant part only)

If you're using windows XP then AKAIK it will only recognise partitions of up to 127Gb, so you'll need to partition the drive into two partitions to make use of the huge sized drive. Might also try checking your jumper settings on the drive and if all else fails, try a system restore.

The thing is that before all this crapola happened the drive was working sweet as a 186gb!

System restore didn't bring back the drive to it's previous state - that was the first thing i tried.

Anybody else experienced the same thing?

ok, i solved my problem and will put it here so that any others who have the same issue can come up with a solution.

first up, i admitted defeat and realised that i had lost all my data. (most of it wasn't important anyway to be honest)

then i used disk management to format the partition, this resulted in the dilema of only having access to 127 of a total 200gb.

so then i went to the dos prompt, formated the drive again using format d:

then back in disk management i found there were now two partitions on the d drive; one 'healthy' and one 'unallocated'

i then ran partition magic and formatted the unallocated portion.

then i used partition magic to combine them both to form one drive

then i went outside and did a series of star jumps and handstands because i was so happy it worked.

Ok so that was how i got around this issue. I may also add that i made sure i had all necessary windows updates installed and i even downloaded the diagnostic tools that related to my hdd from the manufacturers website.

This all went well for me, hope it helps anybody else in need...

And now for a shameless plug: I have a website that i tinker with, check it out here, otherwise good day to you all.
