Dell Dimension 4700, ATI Radeon X300 video card problems
I just received a Radeon X300 (not SE) 128mb video card in the mail from eBay and tried it out on my month-old Dimension 4700. It fit right in the extra PCIe slot, but when I turned the computer on, it made a very loud whirring noise that I hadn't ever heard before. I downloaded the Catalyst driver for the video card (since there wasn't a driver CD included in the auction) and installed it, and it said it couldn't find compatible hardware. On top of that, everything was running slightly more sluggish than normal, and the "Device Control" on the Control Panel wouldn't load at all for me to see what was going on.
Then I noticed the machine wasn't playing any sound either (I have a SoundBlaster Live! 24-bit sound card) and took an abnormally long time to restart. Upon clicking on Volume Control, it says "The audio device supported by this application is not detected. The program will exit." I shut everything down and unplugged it and removed the video card, but everything is still exactly the same. Everything is still sluggish, and smooth things like minimizing windows are now choppy, almost like a RAM problem, but I have a gig of ram and it's only using 26% of it. And there is no trace of my sound card anymore, either.
So basically, all I did was open up and plug in a new video card, and it messed up my video capabilities as well as my sound card. Any recommendations? I'm still under the normal 90-day warranty from Dell, so if it's a big deal then it will be fine, but this is pathetic.
