machine crashing

I have a machine that has random crashes.
Sometimes this is 10 minutes after it has started, sometimes it is straight away. the machine just crashes.
Also when the machine starts up where it shows how much memory you have it can take a while to get from 0 to whatever the number is.

Is this a memory problem or are there any other reasons this might be happening.

Any help will be gratefully appreciated.
