CD-ROM will only read most recent disk.
Last week I built an XP machine. I installed a new DVD-RW drive, but kept the old CD-ROM from my previous Win-98 machine.
I've encountered two problems:
1: After boot-up, the CD-ROM will only recognize the first disk I put in. For example, I installed Palm software through the drive, then tried to install another program, but the computer read the second disk as the old Palm install disk. In other words, it only 'remembers' the first disk it 'sees.'
2: I've successfully installed a game for my kids, but when I run it with the disk in the older CD-ROM, I get the error message "No CD in drive." Switch the disk to the new DVD-RW drive and it works fine. This happens even if it's the first disk read after boot-up (see number 1 above).
Is this just a driver problem, are older CD-ROMs incompatible with the XP architecture, do I need to set some hardware or OS flag, or is it something else?
Thanks!
