Transferring hard drive to another computer?

Hi, this may have been answered on many an occasion but I was hoping someone could help me.

My laptop has died and it looks as if I'm going to have to format it. But before I do so, I want to try and retrieve some of my files before I lose them. I've been told its possible to move my hard drive to another XP computer, but I have no idea how. Can anybody go through the steps needed to transfer my hard drive to another laptop?

If your laptop is Dead then how are you going to format it ??? Did you mean to say that your hard drive was corrupted or you lost your operating system some how ????

If your laptop's hard drive is still alive, then you have one easy option.

Go any computer store and buy one of these:

It is Laptop IDE adaptor, using this device you could connect the 3.5" laptop hard drive to regular desktop IDE interface (hardest part is to remove the hard drive from the laptop, if you are not sure how to do it get a friend who knows how to remove the drive )
