Unhappy PLEASE help!! :'( big sound prob, knows nothing about computers

okay, i use a gateway computer, not sure of what exact model as it is quite old.. im using windows xp

Sorry, I'm no computer whiz so I can't get the technical terms right, hope I'm still understandable though. Please help me. :'(

My sound blasters and mike used to work perfectly at one point, until i decided to unplug them and test out my new headset (which worked). Afterwards I unplugged the headset and plugged in my blasters and mike, and they would not work. (i tried plugging in the headset again but they won't work either), and my comp refuses to play any sounds.

I tried following what was told in the 'Help and Support Centre' then (i tried EVERYTHING). I got to the Device Manager, and under the 'Sound Video and Game Controllers' my (if this is what you call it) "sound driver", (it was Creative-something) was there, and according to its properties my sound was working okay, but when i test my sound and audio devices at the control panel, it reacts as if my hardwares weren't plugged in correctly, though im v. sure they were.

<i cant reinstall the software (or whatever) coz i have misplaced the installation CD, if there ever was one.>

So then i followed advice i got from elsewhere (some site), and i tried switching off the main power source of my blasters, and then switch it back on later. So... then after switching it back on, the properties window finally seemed to notice something was wrong, and stated that my hardware was not detected probably coz they weren't connected (THEY WERE!!!), and as soon as i closed the properties window for the "creative-something" , "creative-something" disappeared off the list under 'Sound Video and Game Controllers'

Next, i decided to try redownloading the sound driver (?), i dloaded something that seemed to have the same name, then after trying to install it, it stops halfway through the set-up, saying something about not being able to find my sound blaster audio card. What on earth is that??

I know its long, not v. detailed as i can't get the terms or facts right, and i may have made myself sound very stupid, please please help me anyway.

thanks

Download this, PC Wizard and run it, it is a diagnostic programme that will tell you the model of your Gateway. You will then need to go to the gateway site and search for the audio driver for your pc.
