please help!!! no audio...clueless of what to do

Here's the situation:

A friend of mine "updated" my hard drive (adding stuff, cleaning it, etc.). Doing so, he needed to download certain/specific drivers for stuff on the computer to work. Everything worked, except for the audio. The speakers were fine, the computer recognized it, but no audio came out. I'm absolutely clueless about what to do, and I've been downloading audio drivers for no reason, hoping it'd work. Then last week, to make things worse, I accidentally deleted the Realtek Audio Device thing (which had an exclamation point next to it, probably pointing out there was a problem). Can anyone please help, it'd be greatly appreciated. Thank you sooo much.

check this to see if realtek is default audio
Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device.

if still no sound get the driver from realtek it has the M$ UAA driver need for HD audio in the download

Hello all, it looks like I've found the right forum/thread to discuss my problem.

I have no audio! I'm at my wit's end trying to fix this thing.

I have recently had a run in with Antivirus XP 08 and had to do a system restore in order to fix its after-effects. After the system restore, I was unable to hear anything from my speakers. I tested the speakers on a Walkman and then worked fine. When look in Control Panel> Sound and Audio Devices, everything in the 'Volume' tab is grayed-out and it just says 'No Audio Device.' Under the 'Audio' tab, 'Sound recording' and 'MIDI music playback' are both functioning and display the correct audio device. 'Sound playback,' however, is also grayed-out. A look in the 'Device Manager' reveals that everything is working properly. All drivers are up-to-date, enabled, and are functioning correctly.

Here is a list of the failed solutions I have attempted so far:
-windows troubleshooter
-update drivers
-roll back drivers
-uninstall & reinstall drivers
-enable on-board audio in BIOS
-disable on-board audio in BIOS
-set on-board audio in BIOS to AUTO
-check windows audio service (already set to automatic/started)
-stop windows audio service
-restart windows audio service
-stop windows audio service, reboot, restart service
-power-drain pc
-buy new sound card
-disable on-board audio in BIOS
-set on-board audio in BIOS to AUTO
-update new sound card's drivers
-uninstall new sound card, switch PCI ports, reinstall new sound card

HELP!!!! I'm going crazy over this!

Also I was wondering, would it be a good idea to go ahead and install SP3? Or should I wait until this audio problem is resolved? (or might SP3 resolve it?)

Thanks for all your help =)
