I've tried all the steps in that guide up to the last one, which is a system restore. But for me, that's a last resort. I REALLY don't want to do another system restore, and being that I just did one (after which the audio ceased to work) I'm not sure it'd resolve anything.

Thanks again for your help though.

try this, remove the sound card, enable audio in the BIOS, install the original chipset driver - restart comp - install original audio driver

when you check audio in the BIOS, are the options Auto and Disabled or is there an Enable option ?

There is an enable option, which is what it's set to at the moment.

Do you think that a full system restore will do it? At this point I am willing to try anything.

try a system file check

go to Run - type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes and note the space after sfc) - have the xp disc available in case sfc needs to repair or replace any files

hmm.. so far that hasn't yielded any results. I've tried twice now and the window just disappears after the initial scan. Am I to take it that this means it didn't find anything, or should I try again?

it does'nt show anything, just runs and corrects faults, one thing the report shows is AGP disabled, now I'm not sure on this, but it is the display, have a look in Device Manager, any problems showing for display.

perhaps going into the BIOS and setting default, then installing the display driver is your monitor plugged into the I/O plate

Crap, I thought I had said this earlier but I just noticed it never posted o.O

I don't have the XP disc on hand, it's my mother's computer and I wasn't with her when she bought it. She doesn't remember what she did with any of the documentation or CD's that came with it =/

Is there another way to do a repair install? or am I just up a creek?

try setting the BIOS defaults

1.
Turn on the computer and press the F1 key repeatedly until a BIOS Setup screen opens.
NOTE: On certain Compaq Presario computers (prior to 2002) press the F10 key instead of F1.
2.
In the BIOS Setup screen, press the F5 key.
3.
Select Yes or OK (press the Enter key).
Press the F10 key. Select Yes or OK to save the default settings (press the Enter key).
4.
Start Windows and check for sound. If there is still no sound, go to the next step.

did you get the Graphic driver

also check Win Updates - Custom and see if any drivers listed for hardware

thanks but...

I downloaded the driver, but still no luck.
I tried going to start, all programs, accessories, entertainment, and volume control:

I get this:
"there are no active mixers available. to install mixer devices, go to control panel, click printers and other hardware, and then click add hardware."

please help, again?
thanks.

check this out

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot
