Hey guys I'm having the same problem, hope you can help me out. Sound just quit a few days ago. I've done practically everything I've read up until now, except updating the chipset driver. Anyway, here's my everest report. Looks like my audio card is not even listed. However it is in the device manager, and says it's working properly. It's a Phillips psc604 plugged into an expansion slot. It's a pretty old pc as well. I appreciate it.

report shows the onboard audio, have you tried the audio plugs on the I/O plate and see if they have sound - the drivers here - http://www.howtodrivers.com/model554287.html

check this

Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device

Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions

Thanks for the quick response... I tried to DL the driver from the site you provided, but it wasn't working. I tried several times (to make sure I had the correct # sequence) but it never produced the file. I even tried separate browsers, but no luck.

I have previously DL'd the driver from philips located here:

http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?scy=US&slg=AEN&cat=PC_AUDIO_CA&sct=SOUN DCARDS_SU&grp=PC_PRODUCTS_GR&session=2009030611183 3_68.209.130.82&ctn=PSC604/17&mid=Link_Software&hlt=Link_Software

It seems to install fine, however when I open up the dynamic edge program it gives me an initialization error, and says "failed to open PSA2 driver."

I did so, but the drop arrow is ghosted out and it will not drop down. It says "no playback device." Actually all three categories are ghosted out.

This is what I have listed in device manager under "Sound, Video, and Game controllers"

Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Philips Sound Agent 2 (WDM)
PSC604 PCI Audio Device
Standard Game Port
Video Codecs

I don't seem to have any conflicts, nor do I have any yellow exclamation points in any category. Thanks again for your help.

Thanks, I didn't even see that one listed. I uninstalled the old driver before I installed the new one you provided. However, it didn't make a difference. Same problem/initialization error as before. Everything is still grayed out.

not sure this will help, but check this

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot

Same problem

I was having the same problem, "no audio device." I tried all the advice but nothing was helping.

But I finally figured out my problem. For some reason in Device Manager my audio device was listed under "other" instead of 'sound, video, and game controllers." It wasn't even recognized as a sound device. So then I just right-clicked it and reinstalled the drivers and it was fine.

Incidentally, all of this happened after I had to reinstall windows XP.

Anyhow, for anyone having this problem, I hope this helps. I spent so much time looking at Device Manager it never occurred to me that it was miscategorized.

Also, thank you so much to Book Worm for all of your selfless help on this problem.

Thanks, but it was already set to automatic.

It's definitely listed under sound devices and not "other." I don't even have an "other" category, but thanks for trying to help.

I was finally able to get that site to work, but instead of it giving me the driver, it gave a software program caled "driver detective."

I installed and ran the program, and it says that my PSC604 driver is up to date...??

BW, thanks so much, it was set to auto and I disabled it however that didn't fix it either. My comp recently crashed, and I had to reinstall windows xp. Now the PSC604 driver installed successfully and shows up under the audio tab (no longer grayed out.) However, now I have a yellow exclamation point next to "multimedia audio controller" under the "other devices" category in device manager. I still don't have sound from my speakers, but I no longer get errors when I play something in wmp, and appears to be playing the file fine. Any suggestions??? Thanks

use this method to install the driver, you will need to know where your sound card drivers are stored, so you can point XP to them

1.Under other devices
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

Don't forgrt the Restore Point

Hello! I'm having the same problem everyone else seems to be having, my computer was working fine, and then I hauled it to a different house. Set it up, plug in the speakers and no sound. I tried making sure the sound card was plugged in securely, and that didn't help. I tried looking for drivers, but can't seem to find out which ones I need. Hopefully you'll be able to make some sense out of it, this is killing me.

Thanks a lot!

Hopefully you'll be able to make some sense out of it, this is killing me.

Thanks a lot!

your model has onboard audio, do you have a sound card installed, will need to know the make and model if not sure then Get Everest / copy and paste the Computer – Summary section. Leave out the Debug –PCI section.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...-Edition.shtml
onboard audio - plugs on I/O plate
sound card - plugs in an expansion slot
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...0io%20slot.JPG

if onboard this is the Realtek audio driver

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...=228&lang=e n

but first you need to install the Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...reg_R1002_USEN

Set a System Restore Point before installing Each driver just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions
