Maxtor Hard Disk

hi all,

i recently bought a 300gb internal maxtor IDE ATA/133 16MB 7200RPM hard drive. installed linux, win2k and win xp on seperate parittions and created 3 more partitions.

It worked for me a few times, but now, when i start the PC, the computers checks the memory then checks then Primary IDE cable, finds the cd-rom and zip drive.

For The the secondary IDE , it does not find the hard drive!! At this time the hard dive is making very loud disk access noises, something similar to putting a floppy disk into the drive.

If i dont touch anything on the keyboard, the computer restart then after the third time, i get "HHD error, press F1 to resume"

I am thinking that i will have to cut my losses(lose my data on the dirve) and get a replacement from maxtor. Unless someone has seen this happening before!! i would be very grateful if someone has had this problem before and solved it.

Cheers for any replys,
ronan

Sad to say mate, but Maxtors have a well documented history of failure, try a different brand.

You might try swapping it out to another system as slave and try retrieving your data that way but I don't fancy your chances of sucess. Maybe try the Maxtor site for hdd repair tools, may make it workable enough to retrieve your data.

Yep, i dont think i will be buying a maxtor drive again. But none the less that wont retrieve my data!

I have seen the hdd repair tools, but my bios or board, nothing will even recognise that the drive is there until is says HDD error. I think its time for a replacement but i also think i might be selling the replacement when i get it and buying a different one. I cudnt rely on this, i am lucky i do back up highly important data! but still alot of files that i did want!! i am tempted to forget about the replacement and open the drive myself...... i'd really be in unchartered territory if i do and i will lose my warranty.

I wouldn't void the warranty if I was you, besides its a major to get the platters out, then you have to get them into a new/compatable drive without damaging the read/write heads, way too much hassle in my opinion

Hi, May not make a difference on your rig, but the OS drive should be on the primary IDE connector as master if using old style 40 wire cable. Both devices should be CS if using a CABLE SELECT Cable. CS cable will have color coded connectors. Some MB don't care which connector is used. Luck Jim
