missing icon after external hard drive install

I have just reformatted my hard drive, using Windows XP. When I try to attach my external hard drive via the USB port, it indicates that the hard drive is seen by the computer, but no icon appears. Any assistance with this problem would be appreciated.

go to the control panel, then to administrative tools>computer managment>storage>disk management
your drive should be listed there if windows sees it, if it is not a valid partition it will not show up in "My Computer" like the other drives. by valid patition, if you formatted it for linux or any file system other then windows knows or uses(fat or ntfs,...i know windows plans to release a new file system,but not on longhorn from what i hear).
anyway....if the drive shows up a new/raw/unformatted you can use the options provided by the disk management console to do what needs to be done.

this is similar to my problem. I did the steps and my 'F:/' drive doesn't show up under 'My Computer'.

It's been working fine and i haven't checked it in a while, but when i went to click on my 'F:' drive, it wasn't there.

It doesn't show up under disk management. i only see 'c:', d, & 'E:' drive. What do i do now? HELP!!
