Cable modem

I have a standard cable modem which is connected to my pc via USB.

When I plug it into my pc I get a network connection icon in system tray and everything is fine, ie. I am connected to the internet.

As well as a usb port, the cable modem has also got a standard network port. I have 2 questions.

1) I have tried pluging a standard network cable direct from my pc to the cable modem and nothing happens...no internet. Does this mean I have to get a hub, and plug one cable from the hub to the laptop and another from the hub to the modem?

2) How can I make this wireless by pluging a standard wireless access point into the network port? What setting would I give the Wireless access point...I have choices on the one I have:

a) Access point
b) Access point client
c) Wireless bridge
d) Wireless bridge-point to multipoint

..for b it asks me for Remote AP MAc address & for c it asks me for Remote Bridge Mac address

If anyone has one of these modems and has set up a wireless network before please help. The modem is a motorolla surfboard.

Many thanks

Hi nk33,

A1- If you are using the USB port of the cable modem then I don't see a reason for you to connect the Ethernet cable (you have to use either-OR), on the other hand if you don't have the USB cable connected to the cable modem then Ethernet cable to the cable modem should do the trick...if it does not work then you could be looking at few possibilities:

- Your network card on you PC doesn't work
- You network card in you PC works but it is disabled
- Your cable modem's Ethernet port has been disabled or not working at all.
- You don't have the proper Ethernet cable (i.e cross over instead of straight through cable), or the cable need to be re-crimped.

A2- You would want to make it a Access point (nothing else).....

In order to make your setting work for you wirelessly....you need to the Ethernet port on your modem working......then connect one end of the Ethernet port to the WAN port of the Wireless router and use another cable to connect the LAN port of the Router to the PC.

Cable to Cable Modem------>Ethernet from Cable Modem to WAN port of Router---------->Ethernet cable from LAN port of Router to your PC.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

When I plug the cable modem into the WAN part of my wireless access point,

A) Which setting do I set it to out of a,b,c,or d? (above)
B) Do I need to use a cross-over cable or should a standard cable suffice?

Thanks
