No sound on a Dell GX110 with Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device

Hi there, thanks in advance for any help you can give me on this one, and sorry if its in the wrong section of this site...

I recently obtained this PC and it works OK except there is no sound. I know the speakers work! The only place to plug the speakers into the PC is onto a PCI card that looks to me like an old modem card? Is this likely? Its the only PCI card there actually, everything must be on-board except that.

Under device manager everything is fine, no yellow exclamation marks.

It says Unimodem Half Duplex Audio Device and that it is working properly.

I've been to Dell, typed in ICECB (Service Tag) but the drivers available there haven't helped, I'm not sure I was even able to download them properly.

I only installed W2000 Pro on this PC recently and it is fast enough with a quick broadband connection etc etc, just no sound.

The chipset on the motherboard according to an Intel Utility is Intel 810E.

This is a copy of the Balarc Advisor report if it helps (cut out the Hotfixes to get under 10000 characters);

Thanks for trying. I've downloaded all of the Drivers offered on the Dell website. None of them helped, several of them failed to download properly. Two of them asked me to put in floppys, which I did, to download to, but nothing runs from the floppys when I try them.

The ADI onboard sound driver fails when I try to run it, comes up with an error message

Check this out
Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Properties/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected.Typically the problem will be thay something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device.

It appears that this is what your Multimedia is selecting

Hope this helps

I tried that. And it does say "modem line 0 playback" but the only alternative in the drop down box is "modem line #1 playback"

When I click on Sound and MultiMedia in Control Panel, and then even just try to hear any of the sounds available on Windows, I get a message that says "Windows cannot play sound........Your sound card may be in use".

So in the drop down box the only options are "Modem umber #0 line playback" or Modem number #1 line playback".

The same options are in the drop down box below that (recording).

I've removed the Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device through Add/Remove Hardware, and then reinstalled it, the same with the drivers but no joy.

Have you tried changing which modem to use, and seeing if sound comes on.Are you sure that there are no radio jacks near the mouse and keyboard jacks.

Cheers

Had a good look but sadly no other jacks to be found. Tried changing modem, changed lots of settings, but all to no avail. I'm currently looking to get my hands on a spare sound card to add on to the board and take it from there. The modem/sound card that is currently in place is the only PCI card in the computer; all the rest is on-board. Cant remember if I mentioned that I physically removed that card and tried it in a diff slot, but still no difference.

Whenever I try to get sound (by putting CD in, or from within Sound Properties in Control Panel) I get the message that the sound card may be in use. With a CD, Windows Media Player will not even list the tracks but instead will say there is a certain error problem. If I then click Troubleshooter the error code will say something like 'No sound card found. Either there is no sound card fitted or it is not working', or something very similar to that.

Either there is no sound card fitted or it is not working', or something very similar to that.

looks like the card may be faulty, the other modem is an Intel and may be intergrated, near keyboard and mouse sockets, on the I/O plate. If no audio jack near these sockets then onboard audio wont work. Sorry it does seem as if you will need a sound card.

Cheers
