Modem problem?

On another computer I have the modem jsut randomly started having this problem. Too bad I still have dialup... Sigh...

Anyway, it's "Cirrus Logic 33600 bps PnP V34". That's what the device manager tells me the name is.

It's usually a problem when I play warcraft 3. And I've noticed the problem is fixed when I play Diablo 2. Warcraft 3 seems to initiate the problem to happen to all otehr games when I'm online. And other programs as well I guess. What happens is soemhow the connection is totally interrupted and the Explorer process gets a bit messed up. I'm using Win XP professional BTW. I think it's a problem with explorer. When I close the game the windows theme quickly changes from the standard Win XP theme to the classic theme and back again, while my harddrive loads all this crap or soemthing. After that I can't make my modem disconnect from the line. That's the really annoying part. I try to click disconnect and nothing happens. Even if I unplug the phoneline, the internet connection it self is dropped cuz I no longer hear modem stuff in the phone. But the modem itself still thinks it's connected or soemthing cuz when I try to reconnect it says it's busy. The only way I know how to fix it is to restart the computer only to be pissed off again minutes later. Somehow I used to be able to avoid this by closing the explorer process in the task manager before running a game. And it used to only happen when I was in full screen mode where the desltop isn't showing at all, so it happened with all games. Maybe it had to do with explorer not showing the desktop? IDK... Anyay now it seems to al;so happen sometimes even when I close the explorer process in task manager, and also when I'm simply surfinging the internet and I C that crazy effect happen to my windows theme. When I do actually close explorer from task manager and this happens, and I turn it back on by typing in explorer.exe in the run command, it turns on and does that crazy effect with themes changing.

It would be nice to at least knwo how to make the modem not be busy anymore when this happens so I don't have to restart the computer.

First of all, let me say that I'm sorry to hear that you are STILL on dial-up

Reason for modem not knowing if it's connected or not depends on the driver (INF)...it seem to me that the drive is poorly written that's why it doesn't know connection has been lost (typically, modem drivers should do a connection check every 30 seconds).

My question is why are you stock with 33.6 modem...why not anything newer ?? I picked up 12 56 K V92 modem from computer depot (for developing purposes) for $36.....$3 per modem...I'm sure you can get you hands onto something newer then 33.6 for cheap.

Cheers

Heh, it's a complicated reason why. Mostly I have a feeling that once I move out to college my parents will get DSL or COmcast. They just don't want me to use the computer to have fun, but only for work. Yeah right!!! LOL. SO they're like, all U need is dialup if youre doing work. Anyway, we have 28.8 KBPS!!! OMFG!!!! We can easily get free wireless cuz we live in mountain view which is where Google is located and theyre doing this thing where they set up the whole city with free wireless. Once Im at college though, FAST INTERNET!!!!

Anyway, onto the actual problem. Maybe I could try to upgrade the driver? The thing is this randomly started happening, cuz it never used to happen before. Maybe the modem itself is a little broken? Seeing as how its 33.6 KBPS it must be pretty damn old. It uses the old huge connection port. I forgot what ist called already. THe big black one that's bigger than PCI that only old cards seem to use.
