no sound with onboard realtek ac'97

Hello.
I recently upgraded my PC with a gigabyte GA-7VA-C
motherboard and an AMD Athlon XP 2200. The motherboard has
an on board sound card (Avance AC'97 from Realtek-ALC650).
Everything seems to run well apart from the sound (no
sound). In device manager there was a black exclamation
mark (in a yellow circle) at the sound device. The message
I receive when I click properties is a Code 10: This
device is either not present, not working properly or
does not have all the drivers installed. I tried
almost everything. Remove the device, unistall the
drivers, re-install them (either by using the CD that came
with the motherboard or by leting windows find the
appropriate drivers or by downloading drivers from the
net) but nothing seems to work. The device does not appear
to have any conflicts but I also tried to change the slot
of another device that was using the same IRQ. However,
windows assigned again the same IRQ so nothing changed.
I have also tried to remove some devices and although the IRQ assigned to the sound card changed, there was still no sound.

I finally downloaded the updated drivers from realtek's site. After I install them and reboot, the computer freezes. When I press ctrl-alt-del I can see that the program that is running is cmdninst.exe. Apparently there is something wrong there and windows cannot process this operation. I need also to mention that I disabled from BIOS, the games port because if this is enabled the computer will again freeze exactly in the same way I mentioned before.

After rebooting and starting in safe mode and removing all the devices, the games port was finally installed BUT the problem with the sound remains exactly as before.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mmm I'm having the same problem with my update to WinXP...

Last night I got it going by some freak - no more stuttering stopping on my GB M'board, still trying to work out how I did it...

There appear to be problems with WinXp and the viaudio.sys file, version 5.10.0.3622.

Try getting your hands on v5.10.0.3621 which works fine. Also the newer version is not digitally signed by Microsoft but the older one is.

If you have enabled it in BIOS, which I assume you have done (it would be silly if your sound isnt working but u havent enabled the sound card) and updated the relatek drivers I'm not sure theres much you can do. My friend had the same problem, no sound whatsoever, but his problem was he hadn't enabled it in BIOS. When he tried to open volume control it came up with a message. Try running volume control on yours and see if the sound card has been enabled (enabled doesnt mean recognised)

I could really use that file, I've been trying to restore the mobo sound
( Realtek AC'97 Audio ) for days. If you can send v5.10.0.3621 I'm at david.ostoj@sbcglobal.net THANK YOU

I had this same problem, so this will probably work for you as well.

If your case has Mic-In and Headphones-Out ports on the front panel, ensure they are correctly connected to your mobo. If your case doesn't, then you need to make sure to jumper the Speaker Out L/R and Speaker Out L/R Return pins (these pins position can vary by mobo, so check your manual), otherwise the sound card can't create a proper circuit.

Let me know if that fixes the problem.

To clarify, jumper the Speaker Out Left and Speaker Out Left Return channels together, do the same for the Right channels.

This may help with Gigabyte M.B. onboard sound.
1. The book is wrong,connect the line out jack to the middle socket (green).
2.The onboard sound card has very low output and will only work with remote power amplified speakers.
3.The problem with I.R.Q. sharing only applies to old systems i.e. Wins. 95
possibly Wins.98.

get a soundcard. thats waht i did with my motherboard when it was having those problems. The soundcard i got was from Officemax 5.2 channel and on sale for only 14 dollars. this was during Massachusetts's tax free weekend. that taught my motherboard a lesson...

I too also have had problems with the onboard sound for the AC'97 on the ASUS P4P800 series motherboard.
I had tried all solutions with no luck.

With the problem I experienced the audio would quit working .
I would check it by clicking the speaker Icon .

A tone would sound through the speakers and the message "Media device not installed would appear"

Just recently I got it working again and during shutdown the audio cut out .
I went to the MSCONFIG file and looked at Services.
I noticed that the Windows Audio service was stopped for some reason.
I couldn't resart it from there but went to control panel and administrative tools and clicked Services.
The Windows Audio was set to Automatically start but it was stopped.
I double clicked on it restarted it and then checked on the recovery tab.
In the recovery console I changed the selection to Automatically restart on all three levels of the device failure.

And without removing and reinstalling the driver the audio worked .

Finally!!!!!!
