thank you oldtimer for your input, but when you deal with as many posts on sound that I do, the only way to keep track of them is to use "quotes" ( and multiple posts in one link helps the poster to identify his reply)and until such time as the
Tool complains to me about this I will continue to use this facility.

note no quote

This is likely not the issue you are having, but I will relate one I have had in the past. I have a Reltek AC'97 onboard card. Anytime I reinstall, XP insists on putting the C Media sound drivers on, which don't work. I install the correct drivers, and the Windows updater still attempts to install the incorrect driver. It is possible that something similar is happening to you.

This is the nearest board I can find at Mrecury http://www.mercury-pc.com/downloads_...p?productid=58

There is no vga driver, so first install the Intel Chipset v5.0.2.1003
then the realtek audio , the site is very slow

SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE INSTALLING JUST IN CASE
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions
