Sony Vaio VGC V2S Desktop CD Drive not working - any ideas

First time user so please excuse any faux pas....

Drive is ok with DVDs they play fine. Used to be able to download music onto cds fine but now drive just whirrs and clicks and nothing happens. Checked the device manager and it says that drive is working ok.

When I go into the F: drive on my computer it says that there are files waiting to be written on to cd. I have no idea what files as it doesn't say. when opening up the cd wizard it says it cannot do anything as files are waiting to be written to cd. I have been going round and round in circles for months.

Is it the case that there are two lasers one reads dvds and one reads cds?

Really grateful to hear from someone out there - afraid I am no expert but cannot afford sony's repair rates.

Yes a DVDROM drive does have 2 lasers, 1 for the CD and other for DVDROM.
I'm not familiar with the recovery process on a Sony laptop, do you have a restore CD?
If you do, try and boot from this, if it boots off it fine, then your drive is working OK.

In this case, uninstall the DVDROM drive from device manager, followed by the secondary IDE channels.

Restart when prompted (may need to restart twice)
