Talking I fixed it! :)

Hi, I read the entire thread trying with you all the solutions proposed but nothing...that headset remained dead.
I have always had the suspect that Windows Media Player played a role in this strange bug, because one of the few things I did the day the headset went down was installing WMP (I always discarded the hardware-bug hypothesis because with Linux the headset always worked perfectly).
I uninstalled WMP as one of the first attemps but nothing...I uninstalled completely (with Revo) & installed again all possible codecs from Realtek (including the new WDM_R207tris.exe downloaded from the official site) but nothing...
Today I tried installing WMP11 and it gave me problems with Skype (!?!?) rebooting the system with a blue screen when I attempted calling.
So I uninstalled WMP11 and the Realtek HD codecs (version WDM_R207tris.exe) installing the same codecs once again and....TADAAA!!! The sound came back on the headset!!

It seems some conflict of codecs between Realtek and WMP...at least in my case (I have an ASUS M51SN)
Hope this can help someone else. For the others...keep trying & good luck!! You'll win at the end...

realtek is a pain in the a**

hi folks.

my notebook (acer Aspire3681WXMi) has become almost un-usable because of this. i am a musician. i need my computer for all kinds of sound applications. none of my efforts to revive that thing that does not at all deserve the name sound card (and i do know my way around computers a little) ended in succes.

when at first it would work properly, and there have been phases where it did, it must have been 1 day after guarantee expiration that the sound card output stopped working completely when a jack is plugged in.

support requests to realtek always ended up with them referring me to the acer support, where i did not get any new ideas.

to me this is a scandal. when reinstalling windows and using the original drivers it works, but updating to sp2/3 will kill the soundcard jack. and still, not even a commentary on the realtek website (not to think of a solution - by now i am pretty sure that the only 'solution' realtek can offer is not to create such crappy hardware anymore) despite this being an obviuosly wide-spread fault.

thanks realtek for wasting my 600 bucks.

Thumbs up after a year or so fixed problem

ok guys, i love you!!!!

i've had that exact same problem for over a year. I googled the whole net followed this thread for months but nothing worked. Even sent my computer to Acer for 5 (yeah, believe it or not!!!) times. NOTHING!

the standby-mode-tweak worked for me but only once or twice. Every other moment it seems like random choice of my freagin' Acer.

by the way, i have an Acer Travelmate2480 bought in Germany running on Windows XP-servicepack2. Same problem. I tried nearly everything people wrote here (apart from the freezer ) even sucked on the stupid lineout like mentioned earlier in this thread.

what finally made it for me was to disable the audiocontroller in the devicemanager....

Thank you so much, but still have the feeling that I will be back
good luck,
syla

Thank you mehulkar you made my day.

I have the Travelmate 7520 with windows XP installed. My external speakers worked fine but headphones did not work. Going to Acerpanam.com and downloading the Realtek Driver update worked great. Thanks again mehulkar.

sorta fix

ok so i found a sorta fix to this problem i got my headphones to work altho the inbuilt speakers continue to run at the same time as the headphones and they wont turn off,im working on figuring that out,il explain what i did.

i just went to control panel, add remove programes then i uninstalled realtek HD audio driver it has a sorta blue spider beside it,after that i just restarted my computer with out replacing the audio driver, when the comp restarts it comes up with the found new hardware wizard, all u hav to do it alow it to acess the internet and hit install automatically,if it dosnt find anything the first time retry it found it on the second time for me,when it finds it it will install it automatically, and then the headphones should work but the internall speakers will continue to go,
so going buy this i think i can confirm it is most certainly not a thermal issue but a software issue something with the realtek driver,

i attatched a pic of what realtek adio manager loks like after all this

o and i checked the auto popup thing when the jack is plugged in

i just hav that speaker thing to resolve

Amusing (in a perverse way) reply from Acer . . .

I just bought an Acer Aspire 4530 on 1/1/09 -- and guess what? Like others who have struggled with this problem over the past two years that this thread has existed, the headphone jack is dead. Here are the details: Vista OS with Realtek HD audio codec ALC888S (driver v. 6.0.1.5624). The headphone jack has never worked for me, though I didn't try it before installing a lot of software, which may be the source of some conflict. In any event, I contacted both Realtek (at pctech@realtek.com) and Acer technical service, through Acer's panamerican web site web-based response form.

Realtek responded over night and is trying to be helpful, providing me with a program by email that generates a data dump from the audio driver, which I returned for analysis. I'll let you know later how that works out.

But I thought many of you who are contending with dead headphones on Acer computers would be interested in the email response I received from Acer tech support. First, here is an excerpt from my message to Acer:

"Apparently like many other Acer users over the past two years or more, I've encountered a problem with a dead headphone jack. There is an entire 7 page forum devoted to this issue, what affects various Acer models using either the XP or Vista OS: http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com...io-device.html . An emerging consensus on this forum attributes the problem to a persistent flaw in the Realtek HD audio driver, although other possibilities are also discussed."

Here is Acer's emailed reply (prepare to laugh):

"Thank you for contacting Acer America. I apologize for the inconvenience that you have experienced. This is not a known issue. All Acer recommended downloads for our products can be found at www.acerpanam.com. Please choose Drivers & Downloads, then search for your Acer product.

Respectfully,
Acer America
Online Technical Support"

Not a known issue?! How on earth could that be? I even linked my message to this two-year thread, and of course, numerous other references to this problem are scattered elsewhere on the web! It really boggles the mind . . .

Exclamation Finally A Solution!

I have been messing around trying to find a solution to the problem for almost a year now. Sometimes it wouldn't work for days and I would have it on standby and when I would boot it back up later VOILA! It would work but as soon as you shut it down, it wouldn't work again. Sound familiar? I tried emailing Acer asking if they were looking into a solution for this problem as it is so common. All they said was it needed to be sent in for repair. I found Acer's tech support number and I went ape-$h!t on the guy on the phone as he was going to charge me $60 for a half hour of tech support and he wouldn't even tell me if they were working on the problem at all. He told if it was sent in for repair that the sound card and jacks would be replaced with the EXACT SAME MODEL!! WTF? Isn't that defeating the purpose?!?! So I went off on the guy again and after about a full minute of me insulting his mother and various other aspects of his life, I hung up on him. He most likely killed himself that night and I don't blame him as he works for the company with the worst customer service in the world.

But today i found a very simple, inexpensive, and, most importantly, a 100% guaranteed solution. No it is not shooting up the local Acer dealership, just in case some were thinking so.

Simpling drive down to the nearest computer accessory store, in my case it was OTV technologies, and buy a USB Sound Adapter. It has the same jacks on it and it completely bypasses the sound card, which means it will always work. No more guessing games! And only for $15 to $20!! Some are even about the size of a memory stick which makes it really convenient.

I hope everyone finds that this helps and I encourage everyone to call Acer's customer support line, 1-800-816-2237, and give them all a good screaming at. I recommend being polite at first then getting pissed off after you have their full attention, otherwise they will most likely hang up. (That's some good customer service!)

Again, I hope that this advice is of use to everyone and you can finally enjoy what you were supposed to have in the first place.

I got an solution (Step by Step):
Press Windows-Key + R(un)
type in regedit
click on "My Computer"
goto menubar > edit > find
loop:
type in "ForceDisableJD" and press "find (next)"
When it finds a Value, it should have the Data 00...
double click the Value....and enter 01...*
do things in loop again till you dont find anything anymore...
reboot

done

*i had problems enter 01, i could only enter 10, till i opened another (random) value which had 01 in it...then i copy n pasted that 01 into my ForceDisableJD...worked

Hello everybody, if this is still a problem...

I have had this problem since I have bought my computer (Desktop, Asus P5GC-MX motherboard)

And I've had the computer for over a year it's just tonight it started angrying me

So I've tried every single solution in this thread, but somebody mentioned towards the start of the thread about the BIOS. I don't know if I have the same problem as all of you lot, you all seem to have Acers. I tried every patch and driver update available (I'm using Vista Ultimate) to no avail.

So I rebooted into my BIOS.

Under advanced there was an output devices selection, and then audio. It said that I had HD audio selected for front and rear. I changed the front output to the only other available option (Which happened to be "AC97") Saved and booted. Presto, it works. Then some small tinkering in the Realtek Audio Manager (So that the headphones and speakers play the same stream at the same time) And when I want to listen to my headphones I just turn the volume down on my speakers (physically) and plug the headphones in.

I hope this post may help other people (I registered just to say this)

Hello everyone, ehm... Akolyt0r, i've tried your solution, however after i restart my com, disable all the sound just disabled even from the internal speaker, I was wondering if I've misunderstand what you told????

After double click into the ForceDisableJD, it appear with something like "0000 00"

what I need to change is the 2 last digits or the first 4 digits??
and what mean by "do things in loop again till you dont find anything anymore"

Thank you so much Akolyt0r for sharing this solution, although haven fix mine yet, but i guess should be my problem of understanding the solution...

By the way, I'm using acer aspire 5570...

Hell with Acer

I just bought an Aspire 4530 and have the same problem. Tried all the solutions here and no joy. Think I'll just take it back and cancell the credit card charge. Shouldn't have to deal with this crap.

After going through this entire thread I had no luck at all (thanks anyway).

I sent realtek a lot of emails and got back some rather crap fixes (have you tried un-muting etc etc).

After CC'ing the other tech support depts, the sales team and any other realtek email address I could find I eventually got a fix from them (after having re-installed windows to no avail).

Fisrtly they sent me a file called RtHDDump.exe - this appears to send a signal to the headphones (while plugged in) to see if they respond, hence eliminating the possibility of a damaged headpone port. In my case I knew this wasn't the issue coz I could hear the ASUS jingle (in phones) when the comp was turned on.

Then....... 7 hours later I got a new file from them called RtHDmon.exe.

This fixed it!!!! sort of. I have to manually unmute the headphone everytime I turn the comp on. Not ideal, but a small price to pay for music to my ears

I'm no tekkie whatsoever, but I'm sure it happened when I had audio apps open and tried to put the comp into standby.

If you have the time to wait for a response from realtek try sending your problem to pctech@realtek.com. CC me in too and I'll see if I can send you the files faster. Maybe they'll put me on they're payroll. lol. Include a link to this thread so they know how frustrated people are becoming with this issue.

I only hope you aren't using ASUS because they're tech support is disgraceful.

good luck

ok I have the exact comp and the exact problem (even i can hear the ASUS jingle) so i'm gonna try to email to realtek. i will let you know if it works

Hey, you are a genius! This IS the ultimate solution. I love you. I have struggled almost a whole day until I found this. I knew that it's not a hardware failure, because under linux the headphones worked fine. But I just couldn't work out this shit under Vista SP1.

Thanks!
