Sound card problems....
Does anyone have anyidea why XP refuses to allow a sound card to work in my system? The original sound card quit a few weeks ago (still have not figured out what event might have caused this) and after some investigation, I concluded it might be a bad card. Bought another, went through the install (XP sees it and then loads drivers) and when I go to Control Panel--Sounds, I still see no audio device, even though in the "Hardware" section, it lists the sound card and reports it's working properly. I've tried everything but hand stands to get these sound cards to work, but it's not working out. Something in the registry (I think) is "getting in the way" of the sound card, but I have no idea what that could be.
XP seems to load the drivers successfully, but "Sounds, ..." tabs in Control Panel is greyed out and saying there is no no sound devices. When I check the hardware device tab, I see the CM8738 PCI device and according to XP, the device is working fine.
I'm out of ideas why I can't get a sound card to work on my system all of a sudden. Perhaps a problem in the registry? What could I look for? Does XP have any "repair" utilities I might use?
Sound card gurus needed :-)
Thanks,
David

Presumably,
This is the C Media 5.1.
Try this driver:
ftp://210.59.227.41/Driver/WDM/CMI8738_WDM_0639XP.zip
XP installs an incorrect setup.

Hello, I have just completed a XP installation in my computer. My sound card used to work but now its greyed out in the sound folder and I have no volume control. I can't use my media player or anything. I dont even have the small icon in the bottom right hand corner anymore. What could be my problem?

problems with sound in xp
i have decided to register to this forum because i had exactly the same
kind of problems with sound in xp prof, especially when in device
manager all is okay, but applet sound in control panel is grayed out,
and wonder that nobody didn`t mention it as far; the solution in my
case was very simple - in services there is service Windows audio,
which often just disabled itself without apparent reason after crashes
or resetting - enabling it made the trick - i hope this will help in some cases

services
http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm
if you google services, you get the above link.
He tells you how to get good access to services. Type services.msc into the Run thing off the start bar.
Then scroll down to windows audio, right click and there should be an option to "start" the service.
