Question Problems with MP3 / WMA player (Netac, maybe others also)

Can anyone help me? The device I am having problems with is the NETAC A100 Car MP3 / WMA Player, but I suspect that the problems occur in other devices also.

The big problems are:
  1. I load some WMA files, and get an error message on the device >NO FILES< which is obviously wrong, as you can see the files are still there using Windows Explorer. I think I know how to fix this - see below.
  2. I also get the same message >NO FILES< for a different reason (see below).
  3. For no reason that I understand yet, the device will suddenly starts deleting all its files every time you try to start playing music, and you will get that exasperating message >NO FILES< yet again, only this time it means what it says - it really has deleted your files. Actually, if you connect the device to your computer and examine it with Windows Explorer and check the "Properties", the deleted files are still taking up space on the device but are now totally inaccessible.

The full details of the problems, and what success I have had so far in fixing them, can be found here for anyone who would be kind enough to help:

This is also a trouble shooting guide in the making which hopefully will help other people!

I really would appreciate any words of wisdom... thanks!

Thanks! But...

I do use WMP (WMP 10) to synchronise protected files. I don't use WMP to synchronize unprotected files, I just copy them as normal using Windows Explorer - which seems fast and easy.

The original reason for this was partly that I only wanted to copy a subset of all my music files (not every track in every folder), but mainly that letting WMP do the copying for all files generates too many folders for the player to handle (it has an undeclared limit of 50 folders, small for a 2GB device), as well as superfluous files such as album art. I reduce the number of folders by copying similar types of track into one folder. Also, most of my files are unprotected, and I didn't know about the protection problem when I started.

Once I have set up my player I take a copy of what's on it, from which I can easily reload the player whenever it gets wiped, or whenever I want a different set of folders from which it plays. (I guess that I could still do this if I followed your suggestion?)

My approach seems to work most of the time, except that sometimes all the files get deleted when I start up the player, and sometimes "shuffle play" stops playing shuffled and goes linear - see my link for details.

I could (and probably will) adapt my approach and do all the copying through WMP, as you suggest. But if doing it in the way I do it is causing some of my problems, can you explain which of the problems it is causing and why? (For example, if I use WMP to copy and then reorganise the files do I still have problems?) I would greatly appreciate it!

P.S. to previous post

Just wanted to add that I have started following your suggestion, and it's looking good so far (thanks!), at least as far as the first two NO FILES problems are concerned.

The interesting thing is that the limit of 50 folders I was experiencing before has gone away. It was actually a limit of 47 folders inside the MUSIC folder. The more deeply nested structure created by WMP has well over 100 folders.

Don't know yet about the file deletion and shuffle play problems... time will tell...

Angry Aaaaagh....

... The good news is, using WMA sync to copy all the files, the player will now accept more than 50 (sometimes deeply nested) folders without giving a NO FILES error message at startup.

The bad news is, it only recognises less than half of the 222 tracks in my recent test. They are all there on the player, but I suspect that after it has processed a certain number of folders it gives up... or some other limitation.

Looks like at the very least I have to reorganise the files into fewer folders once copied, which is what I did in the first place!

Hi, I also have the <No Files> issue with reference to start up, despite the music files being copied o.k to the device. I can clear the memory by resetting with a pin in the side of the player and re-copying my music files. However the issue comes back again after the machine has been turned off and back on again. Have you managed to solve the <no file> start up issue with re-loading the firmware?

I have also read your very helpful guide on the link, thanks for the excellent report. What WINRAR tool did you download, there apears to be many versions?

Also how did you back-up your players firmware>

Thanks....

Glad you found the "guide" useful!

It was WINRAR 3.62.

I don't back up the firmware, I just reload it when necessary as described in my web page. I back up the music files just by copying them to a separate area of my hard drive. I seem to avoid the NO FILES and deleted files problems if I don't change the play list or add / subtract any files once I have started playing any music, other than by reloading the firmware (reformatting at same time) and recopying the music files from the backup area on my hard drive. My suspicions on this subject are outlined in my web page, which is at:

Hope this helps!
