Sorry but another sound problem!

I have just bought my son a second hand desktop which had no sound, so I bought a new sound card a (CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device) and installed it with the cd that came with it. The previous sound card was built into the motherboard so I removed the software using control panel--Devices--remove.

I still have no sound, in hardware settings it is showing as there and has no conflicts. However under multimedia there is no preferred devices and the box to change it has been blanked out, like it does not know the soundcard exists.
Heres the funny thing though, I can play music through winamp after changing the setting on output to direct sound output.

My software is Windows ME
My motherboard is a (Board: Gigabyte i810 1.3x)
There are no options in cmos setup for soundcards.

Please somebody help me to keep my son from thinking his dad is a cheap skate.

I would recommend formatting the hard drive and puting xp on as ME is a wasted space.

The motherboard details can not be found on Gigabyte, are you sure that it is a Gigabyte i810 1.3x ?

i have onboard audio on p4s533 mx! problem is, i installed driver from mobo ad1980msoundmax and installed properly, i used creative xfree speaker but i can only hear speaker on the left side and the center!right speaker is not working!i tried amplified 2 speaker and both speaker works!but when i tried my creative xfree to my laptop both speaker and center speaker works.what do you think is the problem?

p.s
before i already used this creative xfree speaker and all works fine until i clear the cmos and changed memory!
already checked the balance of the speaker in the soundmax control panel and sound and audio devices!
already tried headphones only one speker works and mic is not working!
