Inverter likely going out but erratic

I have a somewhat-old Dell Latitude and the inverter appears to be going out but it is erratic and I am trying to milk it for 1 more month when I have a new laptop coming. The screen first went nearly black with only an extremely dim image about a month ago. I was traveling and borrowed a screen to plug into it, but mysteriously the laptop screen started working again 2 days later. It worked until this morning but went dim again when I was rebooting.

Is there anything I can do to finese it to get it to come back on? Is it likely that the screen will continue the on again, off again cycle -- or is it likely that the inverter is now toast?

Any advice would be much appreciated.
