you need to check the BIOS, go here tp Packard Bell, it's an interactive BIOS to show what to do.
http://support.packardbell.com/uk/it...P660412968#PCI

As soon as comp boots press the F2 key

the Main menu opens

use down arrow key to select Intergrated Peripherals

down arrow to Via OnChip PCI Device - press Enter

Via - 3058 AC97 should be set to [Auto]

if [Disabled] use down arrow key to select

+ key to change to [Auto]

F10 key to Save & Exit

y key to accept changes

install audio again

Don't forget the Restore Point

Hi Bookworm:
I followed your advice. I downloaded and installed from Dell/support:
1. Chipset-and restarted.
2. System Utilities -installed Notebook system software.
3. I downloaded Audio software-when I tried to install this software, there is a message popped up that said: " Device Object not present, restart the system and run setup again."

What can I do to get the laptop to recognize the hardware (multi audio controller) which is already there??? Does the window xp have anything to do with it?? Thank you.

I attached your quote belowed:

""go here to Dell http://support.euro.dell.com/support...atid=&im pid=

1st - install Chipset - then Restart comp

2nd - System Utilities - install Notebook System Software

3rd install audio

Set a System Restore Point before installing EACH driver just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions
