audio device not working

hi, ive recently got a new computer and i havnt been able to get the sound working. windows media tells me i dont have a audio device installed or its in use by another preogramme, i dont really have a clue what im doing but i hav downloaded a programme called everest wich tells me my motherboard info and stuff, but i still dont know what im supposed to do. will any1 just help me through geting a new device or driver or whatever i need plz!!!!?
