Automatic Updates/Audio Device problems

Hi i am new here and i stumbled upon this awsome site trying to fix a couple problems, and now i have new ones. i have allready searched for these but none of them seemed to be the same problem as mine, and maybe i missed them but im gonna post any way. I have two seperate problems. The one i am most worried about is that my windows updates dont work (xp pro). My computer kept crashing shortly after startup due to some strange error and the way to fix it was to turn of auto updates, and manually do them. So when i go to start>programs> microsoft update, it checks to see what needs updating, and then tries to do it, but it fails to install every single one (i have sp2) (and my svchost sometimes goes up to 80K mem usage). Any one kno why i have this problem?

And another one is that i have a logitech USB headset, and when i first started using it it works fine, but now when i go to sounds and audi devices, it doesnt recognize that anything is there, so i reboot and it would see it, and then shortly after its gone again. (ps. i dont have a sound card)

Any help with any of this problems would be great. And im ont sure if you need more information but if you do just ask. thanks

I would run antivirus and spyware tests to see if infected.

You can get online virus checks,
panda http://www.pandasoftware.com/product...ACHEHINT=Guest

get these free programes

AVG7 http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

Ad-Aware SE http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-...bj=dl&tag=top5

SpyBot Search&Destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

if you have a Win cd do a reapair install, you won't lose dats go here to see how http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Hope this helps

I ran all those and it was just the normal stuff (like cookie things), and i didnt do the repair install yet but still having problems with the sound and updating. Does a repair fix the registry? because i think my friend may have done seomthing to it (found this program called RegEdit) and he said he used to for osmething. Would just doing a simple repair fix that problem? or would i have to reformat?

I would advise doing a Repair Install first, a Format and Clean Install will wipe everything and you would have to make sure you had all your drivers.
If it doesn't work then do the format, but you have nothing to loose doing this first

Cheers

I remember when i first built my computer (with help) we had a hard time instaling windows XP. I remember there were problems with the XP disk even recognizing my hardrive, and when it did it thought it was smaller than it actually was (SATA). We had to use floppy disks for part of it and stuff. When i reformat i will ahve to go through the floppy disks again?

try this a System File Check go to Run - type "sfc /scannow" ( without quotes and note space after sfc) have Win Cd available in case sfc needs to repair or install any files. It will run, giveing no messages and when finished will close.

I believe the problem with SATA drives is that SP2 is not intergrated with Win XP, you can Slipstream SP2 with Win XP onto 1 CD go here on how to

I am having almost exactly the same problems. My automatic updates all fail.
My sound will stop working randomly.
When I run ventrilo (voip) after the sound stops working, it gives an error message that says "failed to open input device. another program may already have it open."
when running netscape, some pages will cause it to start using 99% of CPU time and essentially lock up. This includes the page I am directed to after the auto updates fail.
one instance of SVChost will occasionally start sucking massive amounts of memory, them eventually processor time, causing anything I am doing online to lag out horrendously (WoW, ventrilo, etc)

I run spybot S&D, same results as the other guy, it's all cookie tracker stuff, nothing major.

Any results OP? Did you solve the problem?
