Sound has gone AWOL

Hello,
I installed Windows SP2 last weekend and thought it had gone really well, however I disconnected my headphones on Friday only to find the speakers do not work. I have checked all the settings and all looks fine, no mutes ticked, speakers enabled. I downloaded drivers to no avail and did a rollback.
Today I did a system recovery and alas the problem is still there.
I would appreciate any help you may be able to offer, as long as its in plain English because I am useless with technology.
