NO active mixer devices available?

i tried to open my volume control and play music and video it wont work the sound isnt working i have windows xp home edition....i am clueless as what to do to fix it...it just happened out of nowhere it was working forever until the past week

You probably need to re-install the sound-driver (a driver is simply a small bit of software). But we need to know more about your system -- specifically the make/model of your PC if it's a"big brand name" or motherboard make/model if it's a "no name" or self-build system.

Go to Start --> Run, and type in services.msc.

A window will pop up with a list of services. Scroll down to Windows Audio. Right-click
and click on Properties.

Make sure that "Startup type" is set to automatic. Also, make sure, under "Service status," start is selected.

Works everytime.
