Unhappy USB Hard Drive = 'The Disk in Drive G is not formatted. Do you want to format it now'

Hello,

My 120 Gb Western Digital External USB Hard Drive has worked without fault for months. I have 20 Gb Music Files and 20Gb Picture files stored on it.
However, on start-up last week the drive failed to load as before. It is now only recognised as 'drive G', previously 'WD Hard drive' etc. Further, the drive is inaccessible. Double clicking 'drive G' produces: 'The Disk in Drive G not formatted. Do you want to format it now?'

Sony Vaio Laptop
Operating Windows XP
512 RAM
Intel Pentium 4 processor 2.40 Ghz
ATI RS200M+

I am desperate to get my files and so I plead, can anyone help me?

Regards,

Susan

Try running "chkdsk /f" on it and see what happens.

The black chkdsk dos screen appears for only a fraction of a second. The message can not be read.

chkdsk does work for my internal hard drive

Can you connect the drive to another pc to check that it is the drive that is the problem?

I apologise, I should have mentioned,

I have already done so, all four computers showed the drive to have the same problem. I have also tried another cable to no avail.

I'm getting upset now,

Susan

It does sound like the drive has an issue. You could remove the drive from its external case and mount it in a pc as a slave drive. from there you can run chkdsk. If that fails then you will need to reformat the drive and lose all your data.

Talking

I had the same issue with my WD 750Gig drive. Try this website, it seemed to work with mine: http://www.techspot.com/vb/all/windo...at-it-now.html
