Smile Bad Laptop hdd

I have a 12gb fujitsu laptop hdd that I removed from my laptop,and would like to use as an external drive. It had been partitioned in fdisk to 3gb,but now I would like to open it up for the full capacity.

I have Partition Magic 8.0 that I tried to use but it shows the drive as being bad.

I have it connected to my lappy using an ide-usb 2.0 adapter. The drive comes up on my computer as drive D:, and I can copy pictures and data to it.

Is it possible to use fdisk while the hdd is hooked up as an external drive?
And if so, how.

Once again;

TIA
