CD/DVD Drive Not Working

I am using Windows XP. Recently my Torisan DVD-Rom DRD-U824 quit working. When I check in Device Manager it tells me that the Drive IS working properly. When I put a disk in the drive I get a brief flash of the little CD on screen that tells me it started to look at the CD. Then nothing. If I go to Windows Explorer and click on the CD Drive it always tells me to "insert a disk into Drive D". I have tested many CD's and checked them on another computer and they are still good. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I expect the drive has indeed failed but have you tried a lens cleaner?

i experienced the same problem last week,
turns out it was a faulty IDE cable.
try replace your IDE cables then see if it works
