Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal Version 5.0.146
Realtime File Scanning Off

I would appreciate some help fixing this problem. Thank you for reading my message.

Check these out first check for C-Media
Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Audio tab / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply > click Start > Reboot.

if OK
ok go here to get the audo driver from Shuttle http://global.shuttle.com/Download/D...V43V/N%20V8.1a

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case

Still not working

I did as you wrote;
"Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Audio tab / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected".
The Audio tab read;
"Sound playback... Default device: [No Playback Devices]
Sound recording... Default device: [No Recording Devices]
MIDI music playback... Default device: [MPU-401]

I also checked;
"Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic >"
The Startup type option read;
"[Automatic]"

I still don't know what else I should do. I also should let you know that I downloaded the c-type media device online after re-formatting my hard drive. C-type media device is not my default sound device, MPU-401 is. The default sound device MPU-401 is still not being recognized. I would appreciate your time and help fixing this problem. Thank you for reading my message.

MPU-401 is part of the sound drivers, you need to install the C-Media audio driver from the link to Shuttle I provided,
