Plug and play sound card is plugging, but not playing
I have a soundblaster live card (model sb0060)
Win XP Pro sp0
mobo: abit 694x-686b (vp6)
bios: award, release date july 2001 (no newer for my mobo)
(please tell me if anyone needs more info than that)
I know that the card works because I plugged and played it on another computer (running xp pro sp2) (plugged it in, started up, ran "add new hardware", then it found the card).
my new computer doesn't recognize it (a friend built the machine for me from components he was no longer using... tech savvy and generous, hard to beat).
I've done "add new hardware", and it searches for the card but can't find it.
I've dl'ed the driver from Creative, LiveDrvUni-Pack(ENG).exe, run it, but it gives me an error message that I haven't installed a sound blaster card, so it won't complete the setup of the driver.
I've disabled all other sound devices in the "sound" control panel that i could.
I've moved it from one pci slot to another in the mobo... still no dice.
I don't have an onboard soundcard on the mobo.
Other devices in other pci slots working fine (ethernet and video cards)...
If i try to run winamp, for example, i get: "Bad DirectSound driver. please install proper drivers or select another device in configuration."
Here's the content of "sound, video and game" in device manager:
---
audio codecs
legacy audio drivers
legacy video capture devices
matrox wdm capture/crossbar driver (I don't know what this driver is for, so I disabled it while trying to solve the problem: doesn't work enabled or disabled)
media control devices
video codecs
---
i'm stumped and it seems most of the numerous forums that I've searched haven't come across a problem quite like mine.
