No Onboard Realtek AC'97 Audio Device is detected!

Ok, here is my problem.

I recently had an issue with my pc whereby the hard drive stopped working correctly. I decided to format and found I was still having the same problem; I tried using a different hard drive and loading windows vista onto it but still had the same problem which was that no boot device was found.

I found out what the problem was, and it was that the BIOS settings had been changed (by a virus I guess) and that the hard drive was not being allowed to boot. I changed this and Windows could then boot.

After installing Windows XP back onto my computer, all seemed fine except that the onboard audio device (Realtek AC'97) won't be recognised in the device manager and after trying to install the drivers for it, still no avail.

I am wondering whether it is my BIOS settings that have prevented the audio device from loading as I do not think that the card is broken.

I have a Foxconn E-Bot and the BIOS is a Phoenix Award Bios.

Can anyone help me?

Realtek AC'97 drivers won't install

I have a similar issue and have seen others with the same problem of unrecognised AC'97 after h/w or o/s changes.

I replaced a power supply, had a problem with the USB ports, deleted and reloaded the drivers and then noticed I had no audio. I deleted the realtek drivers assuming they'd be reloaded. They weren't!

I've removed and reloaded a variety of AC'97 drivers in regular and safe mode, disabled & re-enabled AC'97 BIOS etc but all I can load is a 'unimodem half-duplex audio device.

Emachines suggest the on board audio is u/s and since a standalone card in only $20 that's probably what I'll do. I'm just frustrated I can't make it work!

Check this out
Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot.

Realtek AC'97 V5.10.0.3621

Hi Barbara,

Many thanks for the suggestion....

Unfortunately the windows audio service exists, is auto and has started successfully.

I sort of suspect that the on board audio is dead, but I'm too much of a bulldog to accept it, since there's no obvious reason why it should stop working after 3 years.....

What I'm really trying to do is get a copy of the avove set of drivers. Any suggestions?

Thanks again

Have you updated the chipset drivers,
