Strange PS2 mouse problem!

I have a PIII 866MHz PC with windows XP in it. Whenever I turn on my PC, the PS2 mouse loads and works fine. However, whenever I restart Windows XP (using the "restart" option), the PS2 mouse simply hangs and refuses to move. Once when I checked the devices installed on a "restart" (using the keyboard to go to Control-Panel>> System), I found that the mouse was simply ABSENT in the list. The mouse re-appears and works well only if I turn-off my PC (shutdown)and then turn it on again. I have tested three PS2 mice and they all behave the same way. The mice are plug-n-play and do not come with any software. Can anyone out there help me????

Is it a specific 'brand' of mouse? Like Logitech, Labtech or something?

If so, you probably need a driver for the specific mouse.

Yes, it is a Compaq PS2 mouse (plug-n-play). I have tested the same mouse on my friend's PC, and it works well on it, without requiring specific drivers (cold-boot or restart or whatever). Why does it hang in mine? Does my PC has virus or something?

I doubt its a virus.

Maybe try deleting it from 'Device Manager' then reboot. XP should then recognize the "new mouse" and install the proper drivers.
