external hdd not recognised
I have just put an existing hard drive in a new external case so i can back up the internal hard drive in my pc (windows xp pro sp2). The case is supposed to be hot-swappable but when plugged in, although the "safely remove device" option appears, the drive does not appear in 'my computer'.
It does appear in device manager and it says the device is working properly and all drivers are the latest. I thought the problem was likely to be that the hard drive needs re-formatting but I find I can't format the drive either, as it doesn't appear in disk management.
I have tried it on two different computers with the same result.
Any suggestions appreciated!
